Fabricio Werdum's next fight should be to determine the No. 1 contender for the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
The options for this fight are limited.
Frank Mir just lost in devastating fashion. Shane Carwin has been out with an injury for an extended period of time. And the same goes for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.
So, who better to oppose him than Alistair Overeem?
Their last battle, in June of 2011 in Strikeforce, was not what one would call exciting. But under the lights of the UFC, and with no love lost between them, it could turn in to a heavyweight war.
The two have a trilogy to complete.
Each have a win over the other. Werdum won in PRIDE, Overeem won in Strikeforce, but who would win in their most important fight inside the Octagon? It is an intriguing matchup for both men.
The one wrench thrown in to these plans is if Daniel Cormier wins his next outing in Strikeforce. He will then receive an automatic shot at the UFC Heavyweight Championship. However, no one knows who he will fight in that final Strikeforce heavyweight bout.
If the UFC is able to send over a heavyweight for that fight, it would make sense for it to be former Strikeforce title contender, Werdum. It does seem unlikely, however, that the UFC would send another heavyweight to Strikeforce for the final fight.
Should Cormier be victorious against the unknown challenger, there is no need to pit two top heavyweights against one another right away to determine the next contender. That does give Werdum the option to seek out a marketable fight for his next outing.
If the UFC heads back to Brazil later this year, a fight against Nogueira would be big.
Two Brazilian fan favorites who specialize in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. It would be a fight the crowd would love. Werdum would be the favorite going in and would have a chance to get a win over a legend in the sport.
Werdum has earned the right for a shot to be the No. 1 contender. He has been exciting since his return to the UFC with two good wins under his belt. But with two men potentially already having shots lined up, he may have to wait until 2013.
Should he be blessed with that opportunity, expect to see Werdum leave it all on the line in order to get a chance at the championship.
