WWE Extreme Rules 2012: Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena Will Make PPV Must-See TV

Brock Lesnar and John Cena faced off in one of the most memorable opening segments on Raw in a long time on Monday night, a sign of things to come when they battle at Extreme Rules. After clearing the locker room, the match itself will be must-see television.

After watching Cena's feud with The Rock over the past year, which included a lot more promo work than anything else, it was nice to see a brawl for once. The fact that it left the Cenation leader bloody added to the drama that's building at a rapid rate.

The days of genuine dislike between wrestlers are basically over, but that didn't seem like the case between Cena and Lesnar. Even though the brawl was just the beginning of what's setting up to become an epic storyline, there seemed to be a little bit of real heat there.

Any time that's the case, the feud usually shines because it adds to the realism factor. The WWE Universe loves when the lines between kayfabe and real life become blurred. It's the main reason CM Punk rose to the top of the card last summer.

Lesnar's return to the company couldn't have come at a better time. With so many WrestleMania participants leaving the spotlight (most notably Rocky), it appeared there would be a hole in the main event scene for a while.

Instead, the former UFC champion has come back with a vengeance. It's still unclear how active he'll be prior to the build up to next year's WrestleMania, but after the red-hot start you can bet Vince McMahon will be trying to convince him to do as many shows as possible.

On the flip side, the last few months have been exactly what fans have been waiting for since Cena became a dominant force years ago. He has actually looked human.

Between getting beat clean by The Rock on the biggest stage of them all and having Lesnar get the upper hand over the past few weeks, Super Cena has taken a real hit. Some actual adversity that he can't overcome with ease has improved his overall crowd reaction, although it's still split pretty evenly.

Lesnar, on the other hand, has been getting massive pops even though he's aligned himself with John Laurinaitis, who has somehow been developed into a top heel. When everything goes into a state of chaos like right now, the product is actually a lot better due to the unpredictably factor.

Now that Cena has lost a meaningful match on a big stage, the thought that he's always going to emerge victorious from his feuds isn't so prevalent. That will make the Extreme Rules match even more interesting.

All told, any wrestling fan would be crazy to miss the encounter as month's end. If last night was any indication, the two powerhouses are going to put on an awesome show.
