1. It?s Lord Stanley?s home base.

Even before the Canadiens began their history of dominance?before the National Hockey League existed, in fact, the capital of hockey in the world was Montreal. The first team to win the Stanley Cup, the greatest prize in all of team sports, was the Montreal Hockey Club, in 1893. Other teams from the city to hoist the chalice have been the Victorias, the Shamrocks, the Wanderers, the Maroons and, of course, the Canadiens in their famed tricolor sweaters.

?One of the essential aspects of sports is the number of debates it generates about which player might be better than another, which team might be better than another?and which city might be better than another,? NHL commissioner Gary Bettman says. ?While I leave those debates to others, it is beyond dispute that Montreal is the birthplace of our league, the home of the team with the most Stanley Cup championships and the domain of what many believe is the most passionate fan base in the sports universe.?
