One to Watch: Day 8

Richard Gasquet vs. Gael Monfils [17] (Louis Armstrong Stadium, first match)As Brad Gilbert would say, this is Monday?s popcorn match. Expect highlight-reel ground strokes, drop shots and slides (a Monfils specialty on hard courts), and otherwise zany tennis. Expect a competitive contest as well. One thing these two have a hard time doing is keeping it together mentally, and their go-for-broke styles should result in a roller-coaster affair.
Gasquet and Monfils have met four times, all on hard courts, each winning twice. To me, their fifth meeting comes down to feel?how else do their shots stay in? Right now, I?m feeling Gasquet. He hasn?t dropped a set so far, and has beaten Nikolay Davydenko and Kevin Anderson, two talented but completely different players. That says a lot about Gasquet?s current form. Monfils barely got past Robert Kendrick in the first round, but has played much better since, besting Igor Andreev and Janko Tipsarevic. A Monfils win wouldn't surprise me in the least, but...The pick: Gasquet in fourEd McGrogan is an assistant editor for TENNIS.com. Follow him on Twitter.
