US Open Tennis 2012: Day 11 Scores, Results and Recap

It was all about quality—not quantity—at the U.S. Open in New York on Thursday.

The women in the singles tournament got the day off while there were only two quarterfinal matches on the men's side, yet the action at Flushing Meadows was arguably the best it has been all tournament. 

Let's take a look at all the best action from Day 11.

Ferrer vs. Tipsarevic Marathon

If you thought a David Ferrer vs. Janko Tipsarevic quarterfinal was going to be the best match of the tournament (so far), raise your hand.

Anyone...?

The battle for "Nadal's spot" was the definition of back and forth. 

Ferrer jumped off to an early lead, but after Tipsarevic won a second-set tiebreak and absolutely dominated the third to the tune of 18 winners—he won the set 6-2 despite getting under 60 percent of his first serves in. Yikes—and two breaks, it appeared the Serb was on his way to his first ever major semi.

Not quite.

The Spaniard took the fourth set to tie things up and then outlasted Tipsarevic in the 82-minute thrilling fifth set, further living up to his never-say-die pesky ways. 

 

Doubles Finals Are Set

The doubles tourneys aren't always the biggest draw, but on a day like this when there were only two singles matches going on, they were certainly a highlight.

On the men's side, Bob and Mike Bryan easily breezed past Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Jean-Julien Rojer in straight sets while Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci got past their singles rivalry to also advance to the finals. 

The second-seeded Bryan brothers now get one last chance to avoid going major-less for the first calender year since they failed to grab a title in 2004 when they face Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek, the duo they lost to in the finals at the Australian Open earlier this year. 

Errani and Vinci, who just had to face each other in the quarters of the singles tournament, will take on Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka for their first ever major title. 

 

Djokovic Djominates

Kind of. 

After a dominant first set, it certainly seemed like Djoker was going to get some devastating revenge on Juan Martin del Potro, who took bronze from the Serb in London. Djokovic broke the Argentine twice and won 30 of the 50 total points en route to a 6-2 set victory.

But del Potro wasn't about to collapse so easily. 

He fought with every fiber of his being to climb back in this one, and it resulted in arguably the most epic set of the tournament. 

With Djokovic leading 6-5 in the second set, del Potro needed to hold serve to push a tiebreak. Well, he held his serve, it just took 18 minutes, eight deuces and countless tantalizing rallies to do so.

Once in the tiebreak, Djoker hit some absolute monster shots to take the 2-0 set lead and seriously break del Potro's spirits. The insane set took 84 minutes. 

That was all she wrote as Djokovic got an early break in the third and strolled to a straight-set victory. It wasn't nearly as lopsided as the box score might indicate, but Djokovic looked insanely impressive against a determined del Potro.
