Media Love the Texans, but the Numbers Don't and Other AFC South Stories

Not too long ago someone said the Texans were already being fitted with paper crowns.

Those papers have a lot of words, but not too many digits.

Today's Article of the Day comes from the Football Outsiders, who released their first DVOA numbers, playoff odds and staff predictions. While the numbers still favor the Texans, they are not nearly as positive as the scribes about Houston's status among the elite.

This isn't a surprise. I previewed what the Outsiders think of Houston a few weeks ago, but amidst the unbridled enthusiasm for the Texans, it was shocking to see their data coalesce.

Overall, the Texans ranked just 13th. On defense, they project to be just 15th. Funny, I've heard that same exact prediction somewhere else. Their playoff odds hover at just over 50 percent.

Those aren't the kind of juggernaut numbers that will please the Houston faithful.

Obviously, preseason projections have to be taken with a grain of salt, but no more so than the "expert predictions." The Outsiders openly claim they don't believe the numbers either, but they provide a needed counterbalance to the irrational exuberance that fans of many teams get swept away in.

If it's any consolation to Texans fans, FO writer Danny Tuccitto thinks they are going to the Super Bowl. And he thinks they'll win.

So there's that.
